RCA Played Key Roll In Apollo 15 Mission |
The Apollo 15 Mission, |
|
Drawing illustrates how the first laser ever to orbit the moon
was used to map the lunar surface in infinite detail from the Apollo 15
Command Module. The RCA laser altimeter, bounced laser beams off
the moon's surface, constantly measuring the Command Module's altitude
and providing data on mountains, craters and other lunar
features. |
witch featured American Astronauts exploring the moon's surface
in a Lunar Rover, was the most widely televised of all the space
missions. RCA, as it has been since the earliest days of U. S.
space exploration, was deeply involved in this eventful 12-day
voyage to the moon. RCA Global Communications handled all
international transmissions of the television coverage during the first
week of the mission, including the lunar surface activity which saw
astronauts Scott and Irwin become the first men to drive a vehicle on
the moon. |
|
In addition to the standard NASA circuits provided by RCA Globcom,
special lease circuits were ordered up by the space agency during the
flight of Apollo 15 to cover the voyages of the Falcon Command Module,
the Endeavor Lunar Module and the Lunar Rover. (Relay Nov/Dec 1971) |
